Major League Baseball: Why The Padres — Not The Dodgers — Are The Best Bet To Win The National League

We recently witnessed one of the most thrilling trade deadlines in recent memory. While I’d love to recap all the trades that took place, it might actually be quicker to highlight the players who weren’t traded before the July 31 deadline. Almost every contender enhanced their lineup or made a move that they hope will bolster their chances, and even some marginal contenders were surprisingly active.
It’s almost amusing to say that more players were traded than not this week, but it’s crucial to note some big names that stayed put despite rampant speculation. Zac Gallen, Sandy Alcantara, Mackenzie Gore, and Mitch Keller were all starting pitchers heavily rumored to be dealt to contenders, yet all four will remain with their current teams.
While the asking prices for starting pitchers might have been astronomical, relief pitchers were in high demand, flying off the shelves like hotcakes. Ryan Helsley, Jhoan Duran, Mason Miller, Camilo Doval, and David Bednar are all former All-Star closers who now find themselves on new teams, right in the mix of a pennant race. On a day-to-day betting basis, the Minnesota Twins might be a team to avoid as they traded away their five (yes, five!) best relief pitchers, along with Carlos Correa, among others. However, when looking at futures, one team truly outshone the others on deadline day.
The San Diego Padres are currently at +1100 to reach the World Series at DraftKings Sportsbook (a $10 bet could win you $120). Some argue that the Padres overpaid for some of their new acquisitions, losing several of their highly-touted prospects in the process. Nevertheless, for the 2025 season, they have significantly strengthened their roster and placed themselves in the conversation as one of baseball’s finest teams meralco bolts player. Players like Ryan O’Hearn, Ramon Laureano, Mason Miller, Will Wagner, Nestor Cortes, JP Sears, and Freddy Fermin are all valuable additions that improve the current roster, despite the costly trade-off of prospects.
Miller, the former closer for the A’s, is among the top relief pitchers in the league, joining what is already one of the strongest bullpens in baseball. O’Hearn has made a name for himself as an All-Star outfielder this year, and the other newly acquired players add vital depth to their positions.
One reason for the flurry of activity at the deadline could be that teams feel a window of opportunity — a chance to seize the championship. The Dodgers were the clear favorites at the season’s onset, yet they have only shown themselves to be good, not exceptional. With L.A. appearing vulnerable, and no dominant team in the American League, various franchises are taking a shot at the title. They must be thinking, “Why not us?” Teams like the Mets, Mariners, and Yankees also bolstered their rosters significantly, making this World Series race feel as open as ever. However, when it comes to betting, those teams possess much shorter odds compared to the Padres, who, it’s easy to recall, led the Dodgers 2-1 last October and had two opportunities to eliminate the eventual champions in the division series.
At +1100, betting on the Padres to win the National League is a smart choice.
